Math Workshop

We are studying 2D and 3D shapes. In math workshop we are working in a 4 station rotation to explore different aspects of 2D and 3D shapes.

Station #1   Building Geoblocks---students work with 3D shapes and put them together to make new and different 3D shapes.

Station #2   Ways to Fill---students work with 2D shapes to fill an object with specific directions and have to record their combinations. (no pictures listed)
Station #3    Shape Exploration---students work out of our Invetigations workbook with different pages to take a deeper look at 2D shapes like rhombus', trapezoids, triangles, squares and hexagons. (no pictures listed)

Station #4    Computer shape station---students go to our class website and click on the link for 2D and 3D shapes. They are able to read about the different shapes and be able to manipulate them around to look at them more deeply.

Research Central

Today we used our new MacBook Air mobile computer lab to continue our research on the life cycles of animals. Mr. Massey, our technology expert, came and helped us learn about operating the MacBooks and were able to use an online smore to conduct our research. We were so focused on our purpose and gained so much new learning.

2nd Grade so far...

Welcome all 2nd graders!
Our year is well underway and we are off to a great start! We have been learning so many new things specific to being 2nd graders and stepping up to a new and more challenging level of learning.
We are all excited to see ourselves grow. We have been setting goals as a class and individually so we can track our growth throughout the year.
I am excited as your teacher to watch you grow and I have already seen such growth already this year in maturity and the new and higher expectations you have set for yourselves as 2nd graders.
I would like to remind you all to read every night at least 20 minutes. Reading fluency is a big focus for us this year and I know we can ALL reach our goal of reading 100 words per minute by the end of the year if we remain committed to our reading growth!

Tracking Our Inner Voice

We are learning how reacting to text by: asking a question, responding with an emotion, having a connection or drawing a picture with a brief explanation will help us comprehend text better.

Hello Summer!!!

Wow! I cannot believe that summer is already here. I want to say how very proud I am of everyone in my class. You all have worked so very hard and are ready for 4th grade! I know today is the first official day that we are out of school for the summer, but I have a few questions for my wonderful class:
What have you all been doing so far?
What book are you reading?
Who has been to the public library to enroll in the summer reading program?
How many of you have been playing outside?

I have been reading "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen R. Covey. This books goes along with our "7 Habits for Happy Kids" book that we read this year, but goes into more detail. I've already been thinking of things to do for Wildcat Team Time for next year.

I cannot wait to hear from you all!

We BELIEVE!!!!!!

Wow! We are ready for our EOGs and I am so excited because I know we will show what we know and do a fabulous job!!!
We have talked a lot about staying positive and calm and getting rid of the negative vibes, but I know some of us are still a little nervous.
Here are some things that might help:
-listen to calming music
-write down your feelings
-take deep breaths
-tell an adult the strategies you are going to use

Remember, I BELIEVE in you and I KNOW that you have prepared well for this! I am so proud of all of you and so very honored to be your teacher! Now, relax, rest up and I'll see you bright and early!!!!

Probability Power!

We are working with probability and asking ourselves "What are the chances?"

We are looking at the probability of landing on a certain color of a spinner, picking a certain color marble out of a jar and rolling a certain number on a dice.

We are using probability vocabulary like: certain, impossible, likely, unlikely, most likely and least likely to explain our thinking.

Calling all Mathematicians!

In our study of capacity we have been exploring Gallon Land. Here's the story....

In Gallon Land there are 4 Queens.
Each Queen has a Prince and Princess.
Each Prince and Princess gets 2 Cups of popcorn each night before bed.

***Now I want to hear from you...yes YOU! :)

1. What form of measurement do the QUEENS stand for?

2. What form of measurement do the PRINCES and PRINCESSES stand for?

3. What conclusions can you draw about the number of CUPS in a Gallon?

4. If there are 8 ounces in a cup, how many ounces are in a gallon? 1/2 Gallon?

Field Day Fun Photos

We had a blast!!!!

Capacity

We are starting a new unit on liquid measurement (capacity). We began by exploring gallons and we estimated how many cups we thought were in a gallon, then got into groups to explore.

Field Day

Don't forget tomorrow is FIELD DAY!!!!  Wear tennis shoes, clothes appropriate for warm weather, bring a water bottle and towel to sit on...and don't forget to wear sunscreen!!! I am so excited about all of the fun we are going to have!

We are AMAZING mathematicians!

We have been exploring graphs and how data is represented in many different ways!
